Happy Tuesday, NOLA.
As we start a new week, USL NOLA is bringing you a quick low down on the news from the weekend. Here are our top soccer stories from the past three days.
1. USWNT clinched Olympic and Gold Cup berths with a 1-0 win over Canada in the Concacaf W Championship. We admittedly are a day late on this weekend recap because we knew Monday’s late-night match would give us an excuse to gush over our favorite American women. In this case, shout-out to Alex Morgan, who scored the match’s lone goal off a late-game penalty earned by Rose Lavelle.
The USWNT is now on break until September, but you can watch the women back in action when the NWSL returns to play after the international break on July 29.
2. Speaking of the US, on the men’s side, the United States goalkeeper Zack Steffen is on a season-long loan to Middlesbrough from Man City, it was announced Tuesday. Steffen, a former Columbus Crew member, has been in the Premier League since 2019 but hasn’t seen many minutes as a backup but has recorded clean sheets in all his appearances with Man City. The loan offers a chance for Steffan to get more playing time that may influence the USMNT line-up when the time comes.
3. In Louisiana soccer news, our friends at the New Orleans Jesters finished their NPSL season with a nail-biter 5-4 loss to the Southern States Soccer Club. In the final weekend of USL 2, LA Krewe FC also came up short, finishing 2-1 against Little Rock Rangers, while LA Blue Goose SC fell 2-0 to Mississippi Brilla FC.
We’ll be back with another weekend recap next week. In the meantime, don’t forget to watch America’s Got Talent tonight at 7 p.m. to catch New Orleans trio Chapel Hart performing on the show.
